Honduras - Mountain Schools Feeding Program

Children, living in the mountains of Honduras, walk as far as 2 kilometers each way to school without having food and water.  Once they arrive at school their expected childlike brightness and enthusiasm is often lost in a misery of physical exhaustion.  Even when school is available in a poor community, education is lost on a child who is malnourished.

A key component in rescuing a child from desperate poverty is through education.  In order to become educated, they must be physically able to learn.  In order to learn they must be fed.   The amazing thing is it only costs $30 per month to provide a child a meal at school.

Additionally, we have found that providing meals at schools is an extraordinary incentive for poor parents to send their children to school.  The poor have many burdens and often their children will be kept out of school to work hard labor or to be sent out to beg to add income to the family.  Knowing their children will be provided a meal motivates parents to send their children to school because they know their child will receive at least one meal that day.

Because of the success of Bless the Children's Mountain School Feeding Program the number of children attending school in our target areas has doubled.  As well, we have established a high school and several kindergartens to help educate the large inflow of new students.  We have also added employment to the region by hiring teachers.

There has been an overall upsurge in not only the children but in the communities as well.  We have worked closely with the villagers, providing them the tools they need so they may have a program for their children.  The community members have built kitchens and eating areas.  The community members cook and serve the food.

Bless the Children provides these communities with the means to provide for their children.  In this team effort these desperately poor people gain other vital elements of good  health: dignity and self-respect.  By helping them help their children the parents and community leaders are able to actively participate in improving their communities.

By investing in their children's education they are paving a road out of despair and poverty into a life of literacy and opportunity.  The children's health, sense of hope, overall well-being and productivity have increased and there is an observable vibrance of new life in the area.

This is a story of love, hope, laughter, strong friendships and hard work.  By working together with the communities we have become a family.

Join this family and make a real difference!
