Nicaragua

Education is the key that breaks the cycle of poverty and yet 6 out of 10 Nicaraguan children living in rural areas do not have access to an education.  Those that do, have to walk long distances to get to class, attend inadequately equipped schools, and lack the most basic educational materials.

In Nicaragua, Bless the Children helps equip rural and marginal urban schools with desks, chairs and other school furniture.  Bless the Children also provides several children's homes of orphaned and abandoned children with the tools they need to go to school.  Impoverished children living near the Managua dump are also provided with school supplies, uniforms, shoes and backpacks.

The population of Nicaragua is roughly over 5.6 million.  This is a country where 4 million people live on less than $1 a day with 45% of children suffering from one kind of nutritional deficiency or another.  Education is highly tied to poverty and 1 out of 2 children drop out of school before completing the fifth grade.  Children are withdrawn from classes by their parent’s lack of jobs and financial difficulties.  A great number of parents in Nicaragua have difficulty paying for food, let alone school supplies. 1 out of 10 Nicaraguans cannot read or write.

This is why Bless the Children has dedicated its work in Nicaragua to helping children receive an education so they may break free from poverty and contribute towards creating sustainable development and increased self-sufficiency in this poor country.

Please donate to support education in Nicaragua.
